How to start a gold nugget collection

By Raquel · Updated · 3 min read

A nugget collection does not need to start with expensive pieces. It needs a theme, a little order and knowing what to look for. Here is our advice for getting started.

Choose a theme

The most rewarding collections have an idea behind them. Some options:

You don’t have to decide everything on day one, but having an idea helps you avoid impulse buys.

Start small

Small nuggets of a few tenths of a gram are the best way in: they let you compare origins and shapes without a big outlay. Over time you will know what you like and can look for larger pieces. To get a feel for each weight, see gold nugget sizes and weights.

Buy with data

Every piece in your collection should come with its exact weight, its origin and good photos. Buy from sellers with public reviews and, at auction, work out the total price with fees and shipping before you bid. We explain how in gold nuggets on Catawiki and how to tell if a gold nugget is real.

Document each piece

A collection gains value, sentimental too, when it is well documented. For each nugget, note down:

A simple spreadsheet is enough. If you ever want to sell the collection or pass it on, that information is worth a lot.

Store them properly

Gold does not rust, but it scratches, and small pieces are easy to lose. The ideal is clear capsules or labelled collector boxes kept somewhere dry. Handle them as little as possible and, if needed, clean them only with lukewarm water and mild soap, as explained in how to clean a gold nugget.

Enjoy it

A 10x loupe or good side lighting reveals details you can’t see with the naked eye: folds, water marks, traces of quartz. Every nugget tells its own geological story, as we explain in how gold nuggets are formed.

If you are looking for pieces to start with, every week we auction nuggets from Alaska, Australia and Lapland, each with its exact weight and macro photos, many starting from just a few euros.

Frequently asked questions

How much do you need to spend to start a nugget collection?

You can start with small nuggets of a few tenths of a gram. What matters is buying with data (weight, origin, photos) from well-reviewed sellers.

How should gold nuggets be stored?

In clear capsules or collector boxes, somewhere dry, handling them as little as possible.

What should I record for each nugget?

Weight, size, origin, date and place of purchase, seller, price and a photo of your own.

Is it better to collect by origin or by shape?

It depends on what you enjoy. Collecting by origin lets you compare regions; by shape, you hunt for unusual pieces. Many collectors combine both.
