Where to buy natural gold nuggets safely
Gold nuggets are sold in shops, at mineral fairs and in online auctions. Here is which option suits each case and what to check before you pay.

Your options for buying a nugget
- Specialist online auctions. Platforms such as Catawiki show the weight, the photos and the seller’s rating, and hold your payment until you receive the piece. Prices are set by real demand, so it is easy to buy at market value.
- Mineral shops and dealers. You can see the piece in person, but there is usually less choice and fixed prices are higher.
- Mineral and coin fairs. Good for learning and comparing, although the supply of large nuggets is limited.
- Private classified ads. They can be cheap, but there is no payment protection and no guarantee that the piece is natural.
What the seller should always state
- Exact weight in grams, with at least two decimals.
- Origin of the nugget: country and, ideally, region.
- Sharp photos of every side, preferably on a neutral background and with a scale.
- Feedback from other buyers and a clear returns policy.
How to compare prices
Divide the price by the weight to get the price per gram and compare it with the gold price. A natural nugget always costs somewhat more than the metal it contains, because it is a unique piece. If the price per gram is below the value of pure gold, be suspicious. To go further, read our guide How much is a gold nugget worth?
Warning signs
- Catalogue photos or images taken from the internet instead of the real piece.
- Shapes with flat faces or mould marks: they may be pyrite or melted gold.
- Sellers who ask you to pay outside the platform.

Shipping and customs
If you buy from another country, check that its customs allow the import of raw gold and allow for possible duties and taxes, which are normally paid by the buyer.
At Gold Nuggets Minerals we auction nuggets from Alaska, Australia and Lapland every week, with the exact weight, the origin and macro photos of every piece.
